LIONS FAIL TO BRING TROPHY HOME
Story by Courtney MacFawn

-Fredericton, NB.
For the seventh consecutive time, in the eight year history of the battle of the bridge, the Leo Hayes High
St.Mary's Varsity Lions have again failed to bring the North/South Bowl trophy back home, losing 35-8 to
the Fredericton High School Black Kats at the FHS Field, in front of an estimated 150 fans.

The first quarter of the game was scoreless. The Lions received the kick off, and made 8 straight
running plays, working their way down to the FHS 15-yard line. The first actual Leo Hayes pass of the day
was by Quarterback Derek Broad. In an interview with the Daily Gleaner's Mike Power, Broad explained
how they (the Lions) lost their focus. "For whatever reason, maybe because we didn't get anything out
of the opening drive, we couldn't stay with our game. We couldn't execute the way we are capable of
doing."

Finally, four minutes into the fourth and final quarter of the game, Broad was able to get the Lions their first
points of the game, with a 20-yard toss to Cody Stewart, who also was able to kick the convert. In the last
three minutes of the game, FHS took a knee, to give Leo Hayes their 8th and final point of the game.

There was also an incident at the field, which required an FHS player, linebacker Jayden Clark, to be carried
off the field on a stretcher. Clark has an apparent neck injury. The FHS team and coaches are optimistic,
saying they hope he will be alright.

Leo Hayes will face Hampton High School for their first game in the High School Football Playoffs. Leo Hayes
beat the Huskies, putting them at a 3-1 record, and Jesse Everett scored his first ever touchdown with the
Lions.
